Phiwinhlanhla (Phiwi) Moyo's career at Riverty shows how growth can come from building on established expertise and taking it into new areas.

Over three years, she has moved from leading strategic Process Excellence initiatives within Operations to helping shape Riverty's AI transformation. Her experience in operational improvement, cross-functional leadership and business transformation now comes together with hands-on AI solution development.

Hi, I’m Phiwi

I’m a Senior AI Process Consultant in Riverty’s AI Unit. I joined Riverty as a Senior Process Excellence Manager, focused on understanding how work gets done and bringing people together to improve it.

Today, I combine that Process Excellence and transformation background with AI. I work to understand business challenges, bring the right people together, redesign processes and build AI solutions that can change how work gets done.

To me, the word “Shape” means having the opportunity to influence not only how we work, but also who we become professionally. At Riverty, moving from Process Excellence into AI has given me the opportunity to shape better ways of working while also reinventing or re-shaping myself; combining what I already knew with entirely new capabilities.

Building on experience, expanding into AI

One of the most valuable lessons from my career at Riverty is how much you can progress by continuously expanding your skills and building on the experience you already have. For me, moving from Global Operational Excellence into the AI Unit has been an exciting step forward; combining my background in strategic transformation and cross-functional leadership with new technical capabilities.

In Process Excellence, I had the opportunity to lead strategic initiatives and cross-functional teams. Those experiences taught me about setting direction, bringing together different perspectives and creating the conditions for people to do their best work.

Moving into the AI Unit gave me a very different kind of challenge. Through the Bertelsmann Scholarship, internal learning and hands-on opportunities, I went from mainly defining and designing solutions to actually building them.

A year ago, I would not have fully believed you if you had told me I would soon be building AI solutions. What excites me most about this evolution is that I can now connect the entire journey; from identifying a business challenge and reimagining the process to developing and testing a working technical solution.

Starting with the problem, not the technology

My work now sits at the intersection of process, people and AI. I work with colleagues across different functions to understand a business challenge, analyze the process behind it and then design and build a solution using tools such as Airi, Copilot Studio, Claude or Rovo Studio.

What matters to me is not AI for the sake of AI. I want to understand where it genuinely adds value, whether that means removing unnecessary work, solving a real problem or allowing people to spend more time where they create value.

The most sophisticated AI solution is not necessarily the best one. The best solution is one that solves a real problem and that people actually want to use and can maintain.

Better solutions start with different perspectives

AI work is naturally cross-functional, and that is something I really value. I get to learn from people with different business and technical perspectives, create clarity around a problem and connect the expertise needed to turn an idea into something tangible.

The strongest solutions rarely come from one person; they emerge when people with different strengths have a shared goal and the space to contribute.

Collaboration has always been one of the most rewarding parts of my work at Riverty. One of my proudest moments was receiving the Team Player Award at the Riverty Awards in 2025. It meant a lot to be recognised for something I genuinely value: working collaboratively, supporting my colleagues and bringing people together to achieve shared goals.

Learning, ownership and the freedom to evolve

What I value is the combination of trust, accessibility and room to reinvent yourself. I have been able to move from Process Excellence into AI without leaving my previous experience behind.

For me, the most powerful development happens when learning is combined with ownership. It means having space to lead, make decisions, bring people together and turn what you have learned into impact.

Advice for Future Riverty Colleagues

If you are considering a career at Riverty, my advice is: “Stay curious, build relationships beyond your immediate team and be willing to keep learning and relearning.”

Change can feel uncomfortable, but as my own journey has shown me, it can also take your career somewhere you had not imagined.
